Nestled in the coastal environment of Jan Juc, alongside Christian College’s Surf Coast campus, Butterfield House is an early learning facility designed around curiosity, nature, and relaxed beachside discovery. The build required a gentle, highly considered approach to physical safety and usability, ensuring every space encouraged independent play and effortless exploration.
We utilised reclaimed timbers and corrugated iron cladding to create a tactile, coastal palette that feels deeply connected to the surrounding bush and ocean landscape.
Generous, sunlit indoor spaces open directly onto wide shaded verandas, custom timber play structures and imaginative garden discovery areas, giving children a safe, airy, and light-filled space to learn and play all year round.
The construction prioritised non-toxic, sustainable materials throughout, creating a healthy play and learning spaces tailored specifically for young children. Inside, wide doorways and low-set windows allow even the smallest pupils to maintain a constant visual connection with the outdoor natural play zones.
It is a calm, inspiring environment built with care, a space that the children absolutely adore being in.
