Set on the Bellarine Peninsula, Beach Street is a thoughtful transformation of an original 20th-century fisherman’s cottage with distinct Californian bungalow influences. Serving as a holiday retreat for a semi-retired couple, the brief called for a delicate balance between extensive heritage preservation and a contemporary addition.
The home’s rich history informed every decision, ensuring the new spaces feel completely sympathetic to the scale and character of the original dwelling.
Achieving a truly functional floor plan required a comprehensive reworking of the existing layout. We reconfigured the internal spaces to introduce effortless flow, integrated storage, and seamless transitions between the original rooms and the modern living extension. Outside, generous glass sliding panels pull back to connect the central living areas directly to a broad, covered timber deck complete with an outdoor ceiling fan. Designed for year-round entertaining, this alfresco area overlooks coastal views out toward the beach.
Steering clear of typical coastal clichés, the owners were drawn to a richer, more moody palette. Warm walnut cabinetry, tactile surfaces, and refined brass details bring a sense of depth and understated luxury to the interiors. It is a home that balances compact efficiency with a relaxed sense of scale, delivering an authentic coastal retreat designed for effortless living and quiet sanctuary for generations to come.
